Have you considered using carbon felt instead of perlite? Carbon felt (lantern wicks, welding blankets, soldering blanket , thermal barrier, etc.) is relatively inexpensive, absorbs liquids, won't drip, won't burn, wicks like crazy, and will also remove odor. Myself and others use carbon felt in catalytic hand warmers (Jon-e, Zippo, Butterfly, S-Boston, etc.) where we replace the cotton wadding inside with the carbon felt. With cotton wadding, over time it singes, turning brown/black. Once it singes, it no longer wicks vapors to the platinum catalytic element, and they either don't light, or they work very inefficiently. Carbon felt does everything that the cotton wadding does, but won't singe. The added benefit is that the carbon felt removes most of the odor from your fuel. I was thinking that it might work in place of the perlite, and won't spill, even if turned upside down.

I have heard many praises of carbon felt. I really want to try it. I used perlite because I already had a lot for our gardening. Carbon felt is on my list and I love the fact that I can cut it to shape and if I drop it I can just pick up one item to put back in my tin. Living in "BUGTUSSEL", there is nowhere close to me that sells it. I might have to check Amazon. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I really appreciate it!

around the 13:00 mark, if you have to carry an extra top anyways, why not just carry an extra top in your bag and let yourself get wet? after it stops raining, you can switch to dry clothes and hang out the wet ones on the outside of your pack? that way you can keep moving while dry.

In case you haven't noticed, my videos struggle to rise to the "amateur" level. I forget a lot of stuff when I fumble my way through making videos. I take a heavier shirt with me specifically to protect me from think underbrush and greenbrier. Greenbrier are thick in my neck of the woods and would shred my soft shell. That's why I take the "heavier" shirt. You are quite correct in your thinking. Packing an extra soft shell could do the trick...

100% on board with everything you have said in this video. Indeed I have tried so many different things out there, including the high end gortex boots and suits and I have to admit I have come back to the basics. They just work. In fact the only thing I picked up a few years ago was to also have a parachute silk jacket, something I was given by another veteran mate. Makes a fantastic ultralight windproof as a quick outer layer and if worn under a jacket a great way to keep in heat. Great to see this video as it just reasserts my own views after many decades of trial and error 👍

Old lady in Maine here. Every rain jacket ive put on in summer, i was more wet inside from sweating so that taking the jacket off and just letting the rain wet me felt better. I go gold prospecting and finding something that wont make us feel more miserable trying to stay dry in a rain jacket or worse a thin plastic emergency poncho. Those would be good emergency shelter heat reflectors. Or as a table cloth but the inside is wet with moisture outside wet from moisture. Going today to antique shop looking at the fishing guys corner hoping to find x small either thy high boots or better jumper. I am hoping a sleeping cot mosquito netting that was hidden under a doll will still be there for me to get. Should have bought it, instead of the 3' high doll.

I, too, tried that fabric paint on an IFAK and a GP pouch. I attempted, for a few weeks, to convince myself that the green was like a “Ranger Green”. In the end I just had to face the fact that it was straight up “Alien Green”. Since then I use regular matte spray paint (no prep) and it works great 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time some types of materials just absorb the first 5 coats. Ugh. Thanks for testing out all of that other stuff and thanks for this video!

Goretex works best if it’s clean so be sure to wash & retreat with proper products. Although I like my goretex rain suit, a good poncho is hard to beat. Since a poncho likes to soak you from the knees down a pair of gaiters over your favourite boots makes for a great wet weather combo.

The rule of 3's is a simplistic rule of thumb. 3 minutes without oxygen. 3 hours without shelter. 3 days without water. 3 weeks without food. It's a rule of thumb........ In the right conditions, these rules "CAN" be very accurate. I didn't make up the rules, however I, as well as most survival minded people see the usefulness of them. I personally have treated individuals for hypothermia and heat distress. The symptoms became evident fairly quickly. From seeming fine to not good quickly. Had appropriate actions not been taken, it "COULD" have resulted in death. February 16, 1995 4 U.S. Army Ranger Candidates died in a Florida swamp near Eglin AFB of Hypothermia, the Overnight low was 47.5 degrees. Look it up. Once your core body temperature drops by only a couple degrees, the effects are major. It doesn't take long for the body to shut down. Even for extremely fit men in their prime.

Yeah in hot environments shelter/shade and water important in cold environments shelter and warmth in wet cold even more so there are a lot of variables, you covered all this I get it, but I was in a bad situation when I was 15/16 years old a pal and I decided to stay out in winter I had a single skin half shelter, it dropped to around -4c ice on the water was 3 inches thick in the morning we had non thermal clothing thin polyester training pants a thin jacket etc, started developing symptoms of hypothermia like deciding to stay when we could of walked home in around an hour, it was real cold shivering all night, put my feet in my back pack done nothing for warmth at the time it seemed a great idea. Anyway moral of the story as long as you are dry you will survive at a cold temp if we were wet we would of died no doubt about that things like making fire were not on our mind. Also we had no ground insulation it was the cold that made us think the bad ideas etc like stay the night when we could of left so my point is bad decisions can be made when cold so shelter and fire are a priority in a survival situation before things escalate.

In 2013, three Army reservists collapsed during a 16-mile SAS test march. Lance Corporal Craig Roberts and Trooper Edward Maher died during the exercise, whilst Corporal James Dunsby suffered multiple organ failure, as a result of hyperthermia, and died 17 days later. It’s real. Still visit this lads memorial stone near the start of the Fan Dance as when I went through selection in the 90s my fellow candidate suddenly collapsed. I had to pick him up with all his gear and run him up the nearest hill to an evac point - he had a close call that day and did survive but I had a lesson in how real It actually is and I never forgot it.

@@ashab1 Close Call There! I was in a situation in the Smokey Mountains and it stormed hard for about 45 minutes just at sun set. It was in June. The temp dipped into the 40s I was able to keep the fire going under a very large cook pot. Everyone was soaked and shivering. As soon as the rain stopped everyone collected wood and set it to dry as soon as it dried enough the fire got longer. We stripped down to our skivvies which was warmer that the wet clothes and stretched cordage to hang and dry clothes. Had it not been for that fire, we would have been in a very bad situation! I've got several other examples but the point is the elements are never to be taken lightly!

Late 80s early 90s, the Airborne in Vicenza (and the Ranger batts i believe)was issued a very lightweight vortex rain suit. Literally a quarter the weight of the normal issue gortex gear. It was freaking awesome. Of course, the Army in its infinite wisdom didn't issue it to anyone else, and discontinued the rainsuit entirely. It was literally our most valued piece of kit. Super light so we didn't overheat on a movement, yet did a damn good job with the rain. A comfortable soldier is a good soldier.

Yep! That's the "Army Way" of doing things! It's fantastic that you got to use it though! Have you every tried looking for one on eBay? I've found a few rare items, might be worth trying. I was a Cav Scout in the early 80s and was issued the rubberized Heavy Weight "Gumby Suit"😄😆😅 Was good in the winter, so I used my poncho most of the time.

In 1990, at 3rd Ranger Battalion at Ft. Benning, we only had the US Army ECWCS GoreTex jacket and bottoms. Some of the Rangers assigned to the 75th Regiment next door had the light weights for testing. But in typical Army Wisdom, you had them, but don't wear them lol. We spent most of the time in a regular poncho with a woobie if it got colder.

The PSS is fantastic! I use it and the Osni's from fall to early spring. The Osni is pretty bulky for my summer kits. The Osni has gotten rain on them (and beaded off) but I haven't worn them in direct rain.

I have used my PSS many times in the rain. It is a great poncho. I have had my Osni in the rain once…. Using it as a quilt sleeping in the open. Light rain started and woke me up. I just smiled and pulled the Osni over my head and went back to sleep. It was fine. It was not a downpour though.

I live in Florida for about 8 years as a kid in the 60s. Visiting as an adult, I couldn't believe how I played outside all the time. I lived in a trailer, so it was often cooler outside. The big thig about the high humidity is that you can never get dry. So, you go into it accepting your always going to be wet, avoid prolonged periods of time in direct sunlight. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! In the evenings if the temps drop enough, change out into something dry and put the wet clothing back on in the morning. I'd recommend taking Magnesium and Potassium supplements as well. If you don't have any heart health issues, a salt tablet each day will aid against dehydration. I know where I grew up "Durant" very close to Plant City, was heavily wooded at the time (Not Today Though) with multiple levels of vegetation height and variety. As a kid I could crawl under the palmetto pretty fast but trying to get through them today is a task! hisnameisiam808 offered a fantastic suggestion, definitely check it out.

I LIKE your presentation here and I LIKED Dave Canterbury's detailed explanation of how heat moves in conjunction with this setup. Naturally, we would have a roll of Duct Tape with us and I would use that to fasten the top edge of the mylar blanket to the poncho or tarp in places where things get saggy. I would carry two kits like this in winter weather to radiate/reflect heat from a smaller fire than Dave was using for his class.

Use to make high temp concrete with perlite. Blend it till its a fine powder like talcum and wire mesh it yo catch any chunks. Then mix it with pure portland cement, silica sand and plaster of paris. I would line the inside of propane bottles or steel ammo cans and use a propane burner i built. The cement will withdtand temperatures over 2k° for heat treating knives and stuff.

I used to have an old canvas Italian Mountain Rucksack. It ha one big main compartment and two smaller compartments each with an attached strap that was put through a buckle. It also had a chain on the inside and thick canvas shoulder straps with buckles for adjustments. That was my favorite rucksack/backpack. Too bad I had to throw it away bc my room got flooded by sewer water and it grew black mold on it.

Oh That Is Just Awful! I had a house fire several years ago and lost half of what I owned. It really surprised me which things I truly missed. Some folks might not think an old canvas pack is that big of a deal.... We know better. It's interesting how we can develop relationships with inanimate items, but we do. I know I have pieces of kit that I could talk for hours about our adventures together. I'm sorry for your lose. Some things are just irreplaceable.

I agree with some of the others here, don't lock the cup in the stove, heat needs to get around it, not just the bottom. I've used these in the past mainly with twigs, but never locked the cup in it. Stick a couple tent pegs over it and set the cup on them, works better.

I want to apologize for not commenting for over a month. Over a month ago I had a collapsed right lung and it has taken this long to get it pumped back up. To make a long story short the VA found it pumped it back up and it didn't stay, I ended up in a hospital in Gastonia North Carolina and they ended up killing me literally bringing me back and almost killing me again until I got to the right hospital that got it back up. I was released the day before yesterday when they took the last tube out of my chest. It feels good not to have to carry a little box around with you in order to breathe. Had I had another way to contact you I would have told you there but this is my short story. Now as far as the get up goes that you're demonstrated well I may be sold on that. It would be good to get out of a quick rainstorm or to even hide your stuff and do reconnaissance. Doesn't look like a bad setup, thanks for the demonstration except for maybe that last part I don't know if I'd use it that way but you never know.

When I do mine I use a “folding bone” to help properly adhere the tape and my edges don’t peel. Also if you’ve time in your efforts letting each coating sit for fully 72 hours this will allow the tape to adhere better. Part of the reason you may get tape peeling is that the paint is still off gassing and literally pushing the tape off the surface. If you tape off your graduation scale before sanding this will allow you to sand right up to it with fear of over sanding.

I've know Dave since he finished shooting the first Dual Survival season. There are a lot of statements/rumors that are attributed to him which are false. I've always tried to ignore most negative information about people because it, in no way has any influence or impact on my life. If it did, I'd try to go to the source and get their side of the story "If" there was any truth to the story in the first place. I can understand that Dave might not be everyone's cup of tea (I'm not either) but the "Real" Dave is a pretty good guy, in MHO.
